Two people died in a plane crash at Torrance airport

Two people were killed when a small plane crashed off the side of the runway as it attempted to land at Torrance Municipal Airport on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The Torrance Police and Fire departments responded to the scene around 11 a.m., a spokesman for the Police Department said. Video from the scene showed the plane wreckage piled up just off the runway, with fire trucks and police cars parked nearby.

The plane was a single-engine Arion Lightning and had two people aboard, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Torrance Police Department confirmed that both people died in the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot crashed while attempting to land.

Both people on board died during the crash.

Douglas Happ, 81, of Redondo Beach, and Gregg Low, 59, of Torrance both died at the scene, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office reported.

Footage from the scene shows the wreckage in a grassy area next to the runway.

It was unclear what caused the crash.

The crash is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
